Jill Biden pays surprise visit to Ukraine meets first lady

It was the first time a U.S. first lady has traveled solo to a combat zone since 2015 when Michelle Obama visited Qatars al-Udeid Air Base.

Her visit also comes as dozens are feared dead after reports that a school in the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine has been hit by Russian shelling. Luhansk is one of the two regions that make up the Donbas where Russian troops are now concentrating their efforts.

Following the G-7s virtual meeting with Zelenskyy the leaders released a statement condemning Russias actions and underscoring their commitment to helping Ukraine.

I wanted to come on Mother’s Day the U.S. first lady told Zelenska. I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine

The show of support before Moscow’s planned Victory Day tribute on Monday followed fresh attacks in eastern Ukraine. Serhiy Haidai governor of the Luhansk region said Russian forces bombed a school that was serving as a shelter leaving as many as 60 people buried under the rubble and feared dead.

“Today we the G-7 reassured President Zelenskyy of our continued readiness to undertake further commitments to help Ukraine secure its free and democratic future such that Ukraine can defend itself now and deter future acts of aggression” the leaders said.
