Chances are you are saw a characteristic black-and-white square plastered somewhere on a menu, box, or subway station. These are QR codes. The initials indicate a quick response, and these unmistakable square codes are designed to pack a lot of information into a simple and fast scanning format. They were invented in 1994, became insanely popular, disappeared, and then returned– mostly because you no longer need a dedicated application to use them.

Today, QR codes are used for everything from augmented reality ads to authentic designer jeans to sharing Wi-Fi passwords. In recent times, QR codes are a key component Covid-19 monitoring programs in many countries, offering people a quick way to sign up at various locations. They are also increasingly employed in restaurants and retail as shortcuts to digital menus and ordering systems, and in some countries you can pay with them without having to touch anything.

Fortunately, QR codes are very easy to use. Most smartphones have the ability to scan QR codes built into the camera. We’ll show you how to do it, but we’ll also cover what to do if you have an older phone. Wait, do you need a phone first? See our guides to The best cheap phones or our guide on how to do it reset the old phone at the factory.

Apple has introduced QR code support in 2017. Every iPhone with iOS 11 or later it can scan the QR code directly from the camera app. Here’s how:

  1. Open the camera app.
  2. Select the rear camera inside Photography fashion.
  3. Center the QR code you want to scan on the screen and hold the phone still for a few seconds.
  4. Tap the notification that appears to open the link. (You must be connected to the Internet to do this.)

If you have an Android phone

In 2018, Google introduced QR code support, so most, but not all, phones with Android 9 or later can scan QR codes from the camera app. Here’s how:

  3. Center the QR code you want to scan on the screen and hold the phone still for a few seconds.
  4. Tap the notification that appears to open the link. (You must be connected to the Internet to do this.)

  4. Tap the notification that appears to open the link. (You must be connected to the Internet to do this.)

Use the app to scan the QR code

Unfortunately, Google Lens mysteriously doesn’t work on certain phones, but don’t worry, it exists others way. If both the camera app and Google Lens don’t work on your Android phone, it may be time to try the app to scan a third-party QR code.

There are tons of them in the Play Store, but most are full of ads and require a suspiciously long list of permissions. We recommend an open source application QR code No ads because it only requires permission to access your camera and no ads. Here’s how to use it:
