IKEA’s first smart air purifier is also an auxiliary desk

There are many reasons to buy an air purifier – like inhaling cleaner air or fighting allergies – but does it have to be smart? Prices in the category can range from $ 80 to $ 800 for add-ons including app-based controls, compatibility with smart assistants like Alexa, access to more data, and customization. As part of its first sting into a smart air purifier, IKEA wants to penetrate the market by sticking to its characteristics: affordability and minimalism.

The Swedish giant with flat packaging announces two “Starkwind” devices, a stand-alone air purifier on the floor and a model of an auxiliary table, which cost 129 and 189 dollars, respectively. However, you will have to pay a separate $ 35 smart home center to access app-based controls.

In this price range you will not get ringtones and whistles available on more advanced smart and regular models Thousands i Dyson. Both IKEA purifiers are identical inside: They feature a three-filter system designed to capture larger particles such as hair and dust; 99.5 percent of smaller particles in the air measuring less than 2.5 micrometers (or one 400 millimeters) of both dust and pollen; and pollutants like formaldehyde and even bad odors.

Starkwind also has five different fan speeds that can be used alone or controlled and deployed from the IKEA Home app along with its TRÅDFRI smart home hub. The latter is a puck-shaped device that acts as a bridge between your IKEA smart products (e.g. blinds,, light bulbs i speakers) and your phone. While the automatic mode relies on a built-in sensor to automatically adjust the fan speed depending on the amount of smaller particles in the air. You can check the readings yourself in the app.

The stand-alone Starkwind will be available in black and white, while the side table is in dark or light. Both will arrive in IKEA stores and online in October.
