Apple CEO Tim Cook is not known for losing his composure. He won strict words for Facebook, and people trying to do A TV show based on Gawker for Apple TV +, but generally speaking? Cook turns out to be a genius, if he fainted surprisingly, sir – your healthy technological grandfather. At least until you call him on the phone with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The story says that in 2016, Tesla was in severe financial difficulties. Cook talked to Musk and suggested Apple buy Tesla. An intrigued Musk set one condition – that he be the executive director. Cook agreed, thinking he was referring to Tesla’s CEO. And then Elon Musk, since Elon Musk said no, Cook didn’t understand. He wanted to be CEO Apple. Then Cook reportedly said “Fuck you” and hung up.
It’s a spicy meatball story and it’s courtesy review of the LA Times Power Play, a book by Tim Higgins, a Wall Street Journal reporter, on the history of Tesla. It is also contradictory the yarn that Musk wove in late 2020. At the time, Musk tweeted, “During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I turned to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple buying Tesla (for 1/10 of our current value). He refused to attend the meeting. ”
He said that in itself could cause trouble for the technology director. However, the plot is thickening. Ashlee Vance, Bloomberg journalist and author Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the search for a fantastic future, tweeted that Musk told him “I never met, talked to or even wrote correspondence with Tim Cook.” Musk too tweeted personally, saying “Cook and I never talked or wrote to each other” before he shared the same story he tweeted back in December. In digging, and Musk tweeted that Higgins managed to make his book fake * and * boring. ”
However, they both appear to have been present at a meeting with former President Donald Trump in New York in December 2016. Whether they talked at that meeting, only a handful of people really know.
Meanwhile, Cook himself said ua Interview for the New York Times earlier this year that “he never talked to Elon, though [he had] great admiration and respect for the company he built. ”
In the midst of all this, Higgins he also went on Twitter, writing that Musk and Apple were given the opportunity to comment on the story, and they didn’t. “This anecdote comes from Musk’s own report of the conversation, according to people who heard the retelling at the time,” Higgins wrote.
Obviously, someone is lying somewhere about something – although to be honest, the fact that this story is credible at all says a lot about everyone involved. Neither Cook nor Musk is likely to deviate from the official line, but it is not unreasonable to think that there could be some tension between the two companies. In recent months, rumors have surfaced that Apple is still quiet works on his own electric car. In 2015, it was rumored that the two companies would be part of it “Poaching War”, so much so that Musk talked to a German newspaper. “Important engineers? “They hired people we fired,” Musk said he reportedly told Handelsblatt. “We always jokingly call Apple the Tesla Cemetery.” If you fail at Tesla, you work at Apple. I’m not kidding. ”Musk also took his good share of consecutive shots at Apple during a call for earnings earlier this week and shortly after denying ever meeting Cook, he tweeted in support of Epic Games.
I don’t know, Elon. You don’t make it easy for everyone to believe none this happened.
