Like the battle in the Marvel movie, Disney and Scarlett Johansson continue to exchange blows.
It all started on Thursday Johansson filed a lawsuit accusing Disney of breach of contract for Black widow, which guarantees an exclusive cinema edition. Disney then responded with a statement accusing her of “callous neglect”The COVID-19 pandemic also revealed its salary on film: $ 20 million. The haymakers resumed on Friday when Johansson’s agency, the Creative Artists Agency, issued a statement resigning. “I want to address a statement from the Walt Disney Company issued in response to a lawsuit filed against them yesterday by our client Scarlett Johansson,” Bryan Lourd, co-chair of the Creative Artists Agency, said in a statement he obtained Variety. “They shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make someone look, and I know she didn’t.”
“Scarlett has been a Disney partner in nine films, which have earned billions for Disney and its shareholders,” Lourd continued. “The company included her salary in a press release in an attempt to arm her success as an artist and business woman, as if she should be ashamed of it. Scarlett is extremely proud of the work in which she, and all the actors, writers, directors, producers and creative team of Marvel have been a part for more than a decade … This lawsuit was filed as a result of Disney’s decision to knowingly violate Scarlett’s contract. They have very deliberately shifted revenue and profit to the Disney + side, leaving artistic and financial partners out of their new equation. That’s it, clean and simple. Disney’s direct attack on her character and everything else they implied is beneath the company with which many of us in the creative community have worked successfully for decades. ”
In case you don’t remember Disney’s statement Lourd refers to, here it is in its entirety: “There is no filing of this submission. The lawsuit is particularly sad and disturbing because of the callous disregard for the horrific and long-lasting global consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and, further, disclosure Black widow at Disney + with Premier Access has significantly improved its ability to earn additional compensation in addition to the $ 20 million earned so far. ”
This will certainly be the start of a long battle, although the results could prove dramatic for the entertainment industry as a whole, especially if Johansson wins the lawsuit instead of settling or dismissing it in court. You may remember the recent great pressure of the authors who were unite in the fight against Disney after copyright Alan Dean Foster accused the company retention Star Wars book fee after the acquisition of Lucasfilm. Johansson has a big enough name (and certainly enough money) to make this fight very public and protracted, unlike countless others who don’t have the privilege of fighting a company worthy estimated at $ 122.18 billion.
And that’s not the end. Matt Belloni, a former Hollywood Reporter editor, said in his newsletter (published by Screenrant) so that Emma Stone could consider a similar lawsuit in connection with Cruella released by Disney exclusively through its Premier Access streaming services. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski they may have looked at similar options with his Paramount film, Quiet place part 2, with Blunt’s latest film, Jungle cruise, which is coming to theaters today and Disney + Premier Access. Take the popcorn. Unless you’re Disney. Because it will be very interesting.
