Since its launch last year, Google is introducing its new one TV interface on multiple devices and services. Last week, Android TV exported some of the best features of Google TV, including watchlist, recommended setup, and detail pages. Now on the move is the Google TV app on Android, once Play Movies & TV, a versatile entertainment hub for streaming, buying and renting movies and TV shows. Thanks to the new update, the app gets a fresh design and a host of new reality, global and TV programs.
As if branding isn’t complicated enough, to complicate things, the service is only available in the US. For everyone else there is a Play Movies and TV app that is limited to digital downloads.
If we get that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the new stuff. As for new content, Google adds programs from Discovery + and Rakuten’s Asian drama wiki Viki, along with children’s shows from Cartoon Network, PBS for Kids and Boomerang, and live TV from YouTube TV, Philo and fuboTV.
In the meantime, the new design should make it easier to decide what to look for. Google highlights movies and TV shows with 16: 9 widescreen posters, under which you can find Rotten Tomatoes results. The company has also improved its detection algorithm to suit movies and shows to your liking. You can test it by flipping through new lines of personalized recommendations, including new subgenres like sci-fi thrillers and summer blockbusters.
