Spotify is introducing a feature to notify people when their favorite podcast artists and producers have a new release to check out. In the form of a ringtone icon you will find at the top of the home interface of the application, News panel collects new releases of bands, musicians and shows that you follow on the platform. Spotify says the feature will update in real time, with a blue dot overlaid on the ringtone icon that indicates when the panel has been refreshed with new content. Spotify plans to introduce this feature to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks.
Intentionally, What’s New is similar to the existing Spotify Release the radar list. Both are designed to display new content that you will add to your Spotify library, but the way they perform that task is different. I like Discover Weekly, Release Radar uses a combination of human preparation and software to highlight songs you’ll most likely enjoy from a new album, EP, or single. What is new, in contrast, gives up the curator in favor of comprehensiveness. It also has the advantage of a dedicated interface element. As a playlist, Release Radar can easily get lost among all the other playlists you can add to your Spotify library.
