Zola director Janicza Bravo will direct and be the executive producer on FX pilot for Related– Adaptation of a novel written by a prolific science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler.

According to Deadline, the project originates from Guards writers Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Courtney Lee-Mitchell, in collaboration with the book Protozoa Pictures by Darren Aronofsky. Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields (authors and producers of FX Americans) will also be produced by Kindred, and actress Mallori Johnson should star.

The book has sold more than a million copies and has seen a resurgence of interest and popularity since the novel was first published in 1979. Bravo talks about the impact of the book on her life after reading in college.

“I read it first Related 20 years ago, ”said Bravo. “I was in college. I have never seen myself in such a world. And it’s certainly not at its center. What can only seem like a portrait of an invisible woman is also a strong embrace of our relationship to history and how it can bring us closer to our future. After what seemed like I was losing a year of life that I got to know so well, the opportunity to direct an adaptation of this specific text was a victory. On top of that, the partnership with Branden is something I’ve wanted for a long time. “

Related is the story of a time travel that follows Dana, a young brunette who has just arrived in Los Angeles. Once she settles into her new home, she is suddenly transported back and forth between modern LA and a 19th-century plantation with which her family has a connection.

Related has been adapted in a graphic novel Damian Duffy and John Jennings. The book won the Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Media for 2018.

Production on pilot is on the way to start this September.
