Joe Biden said Facebook and other social media platforms are “killing people” by allowing disinformation about COVID-19 to spread on their platforms.
Biden’s comments came in response to a reporter who asked the president what his message was to “platforms like Facebook” regarding misinformation about COVID-19. “They’re killing people,” Biden said. “I think they are real – look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated. And they kill people. “
His remarks, a day after the surgeon general announced it health advice on the dangers of vaccine misinformation comes amid growing pressure for Facebook and other platforms to do more to address misinformation about coronavirus vaccines. But Facebook is under special scrutiny because of its size and by suppressing untruths about vaccines.
Reads from the Center for the Suppression of Digital Hate have revealed that much of the misinformation about vaccines spreading over the Internet can be linked to – many of whom are still active on Facebook despite the company’s attempts on vaccine misinformation in recent months. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
