Samsung’s latest HDR image processing chip is designed for in-vehicle camera systems



Cars are loaded with cameras these days, including front and rear, mirrors, side sensors and driver surveillance cameras. Samsung is trying to attack that market with a specially designed car sensor that uses unique technology to adapt to low and bright lighting situations, the company announced.

Touch smaller than the sensors used on smartphones, the ISOCELL Auto 4AC offers a resolution of 1,280 x 960, but has a unique “CornerPixel” layout. Within a single-pixel range, it uses 1-micron and 3-micron photodiodes, the latter of which are used to capture images in low-light situations. Similar Sony HDR car sensor, can record video at night, while at the same time adapting to rapid changes in lighting situations such as tunnels.


“With two photodiodes that simultaneously capture images in different exposures, the sensor offers HDR up to 120 dB with minimal motion blur, allowing smoother transitions between dark and light areas, while keeping more detail about the road ahead,” they say in Samsung. At the same time, it can alleviate the problems of flickering with LED lamps over 90 hertz used in headlights, street lamps and other sources.

Samsung is rumored to have won a $ 436 million contract to supply “America’s largest manufacturer EV” with camera modules to replace the mirrors, according to Korea Economic Daily. As with other automotive sensors, ISOCELL Auto 4AC can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to 125 degrees Celsius, and can be adapted to both human (mirrors, spare cameras, etc.) and machine (self-driving) systems. The sensor is currently being produced, so it could appear in cars in the near future.
