Amazon’s buyout of MGM it may take much longer than planned. Information sources they say the Federal Trade Commission has launched an “in-depth” investigation into Amazon’s purchase of MGM over the possibility of antitrust abuse. Officials are worried about the possibility that the acquisition will “illegally encourage” Amazon’s power in offering goods and services, and not just the content it produces.

MGM declined to comment. We asked Amazon for a comment.

The probe would not be completely unexpected. FTC and Justice Department agree to review job when frequent Big Tech critic Lina Khan named as FTC chair. Amazon expected repression and went so far ask for Khan’s exception in forthcoming cases. He is not expected to withdraw from the MGM investigation.

This will not necessarily result in the FTC blocking the deal. Still, this could impose conditions on the purchase and could easily delay the finalized deal for several months. It took Google more than a year finish acquiring Fitbit – Amazon may have to wait a similar amount of time to own MGM, and that is provided there are no major hurdles.
